Meal coupons on Western Railway trains soon

MUMBAI: Western Railway (WR) will introduce meal coupons to prevent malpractices like overcharging or serving less than the mandatory quantity by pantry car operators on long-distance trains.
WR launched the service on the Mumbai Central-Jaipur Superfast Express on Thursday and plans to extend it to other trains soon. Central Railway has the system on the Dadar-Chennai Express and Konark Express , both of them south-bound trains.
There have been complaints about overcharging by pantry car staff, besides serving less than the mandatory items on the menu to the commuters.
Sharat Chandrayan, chief public relations officer, WR, said, "The pre-printed meal coupons will be sold in advance by pantry car staff to passengers who want to have standard breakfast, lunch or dinner. Commuters can exchange the coupons at the time of service of meals by the pantry staff." There have been complaints about overcharging by pantry car staff, besides serving less than the mandatory items on the menu to the commuters.
Chandrayan said, "The meal tariffs and menu items, along with quantity to be served, have been printed on the coupons. With the introduction of the coupons, overcharging will be eliminated. Passengers will get menu items printed on coupons. It will cut out the practice of unauthorized hawking by outsiders."
A senior official can be contacted by passengers on 9004490971 with complaints.
A CR official said, "There are no plans to extend the system. But we will analyze the results of WR and then take a final call."
CR and WR are sending text messages to subscribers, informing them about the menus and rates.
